Out there in the desert, on the edge of a town called Borrego Springs, you’ll find a Tom Fazio design that ebbs and flows through the sands of Southern California. Rams Hill Golf Club was a track I’d heard and seen so much about. Not from your typical Top 100 lists or hosting a PGA Tour event, but from the countless videos and photos across social media. It’s a public golf club that welcomes the lens of a photographer and the microphone of a creator; it’s uniquely accepting of golf’s new age.
My first time playing Rams Hill Golf Club was the foursome of Ube (@ubewolf), Thomas Reiten (@reiten) and Bradley Dunn (@bradleycdunn). There must’ve been about six cameras between the four of us and for good reason! The golf course is as visually stunning as it is enjoyable to play. We spent the whole afternoon swapping between a golf club and a camera. At times it was tough to decide if you should stand and contemplate your next shot or raise the camera to your eye and find a frame to capture.
For a desert course, there’s quite a bit of elevation. The 7,232-yard track runs up and down the sand valley, giving you great views of the surrounding Anza Borrego State Park. There’s water - but not too much water. Desert - but it’s not target golf. Bunkers—but they aren’t unfair or obnoxious. Rams Hill Golf Club is the place you go when you need a reminder of what fun, playable, desert golf can look like.
