Six days have turned Luke Donald into a European legend.
Of course, it’s impossible to exaggerate the work the Englishman and his team put in while preparing for each of the last two Ryder Cups. But after his win on foreign soil at Bethpage Black, Donald is being widely considered the greatest European captain of all time.
But, as is often the case, eyes are already on Ireland's Adare Manor and 2027. The big question for Team Europe: will Donald return for a trilogy?
The former World No. 1 is in New Delhi this week for the DP World India Championship at Delhi GC, and was asked if he’ll be back at the helm in Ireland.
“Well, I'm trying to still enjoy this one, whether it be a captain or whether I'm not a captain,” Donald said. “If I'm not a captain in two years' time and the captain wants me to be there, then I'm sure I would be happy to help him in any way he wanted.”
Keeping his cards close to his chest, I respect it. If I were in charge of picking Europe’s captain, Donald would already have the reins. He’s done an unbelievable job and has taken preparation to another level. It seems like he’s cracked a code. It’d be tough to move on from that.
As for being called the greatest European captain ever, Donald did the classy thing and distributed the acclaim.
“It's pretty humbling when someone says you're the greatest captain,” Donald said. “Maybe it's a little bit of a reaction in the present moment, but I certainly—I've given a lot to it. I'm very happy with the results that came with it, but you need those 12 players. You need the back room teams. You need the vice captains. You need so many others to make that happen.
“Certainly I play a role, but I play a small role in terms of a larger picture. I certainly couldn't do it without the amazing support we have behind me.”
A few of his players also made the trip to New Delhi—Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, and Viktor Hovland—so I’m sure there will be some more celebratory drinks taken down over the next few days.
Should be an enjoyable week for those boys.
