Thank You, Brandt Snedeker—Signed Every Team USA Fan

Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker made me a little nervous during his pre-tournament press conference at the Wyndham Championship in regards to Jackson Koivun making his squad for Medinah.

“For Jackson, it's a unique case because he really hasn't played that many events as a professional. Obviously played a bunch of events as an amateur…You look at everything. You talk to people around him, you talk to other players who have played with him, try to get a good sense of who he is and what makes him tick and then go from there," Snedeker said.

“But there's probably 20, 22 guys that have a chance of making this team right now so it's kind of wide open. There's guys who played great golf over two years that are right there that probably deserve to be picked and deserve to be on this team. The golf's going to dictate what happens from here.”

And when Koivun failed to advance to the BMW Championship, part of me thought the dream of watching the 21-year-old don red, white, and blue at the end of September was dead. But then on Tuesday, Snedeker did what every golf fan wanted—he used his final pick on the kid who could represent the United States at every team event for the next 15 years.

During his time at Auburn, Koivun went 13-4-1 in match play, and at last year’s Walker Cup, he went 3-1 at Cypress Point, which included a 2-0 mark in singles. There’s no doubt in my mind he’s going to thrive in Chicago—I’m just glad Sneds felt the same way.

As for his other captain’s picks, Snedeker nailed it. Chris Gotterup has been one of the best players in the world for over a year, you don’t leave Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and Justin Thomas off a team-event roster, and Jacob Bridgeman showed he can perform on golf’s biggest stages with his win over Rory McIlroy at the Genesis Invitational.

The boys have a few weeks off before the PGA Tour is back in action at the Biltmore Championship Asheville from Sept. 17-20, which I’m sure Snedeker will use as not only a warm-up, but a chance to see how certain guys play together (he should have some control over pairings for the first two rounds).

Then it’s game time, and the team will head to Medinah to try to win their 11th straight Presidents Cup. No pressure, boys.
