Cameron Young Went Hunting at Sawgrass—and Bagged THE PLAYERS

Major League gave us one of the most iconic GIFs in sports. Turns out it perfectly sums up Cameron Young winning THE PLAYERS.

Major League is one of the greatest baseball movies of all time—and I’m not talking about its quotability. Because of Davis Ward’s film, we have one of the most iconic GIFs in social media.

It just how happens that perfectly encapsulates Cameron Young’s win at THE PLAYERS, too—a little on the nose given his MLB sponsorship, but you get it.

Standing on the 17th tee a shot back of Matt Fitzpatrick, with the Englishman’s already on dry land, Young did his best Rickie Fowler impression and stuffed it just beyond the Sunday traditional front-right flag. After a miss from Fitzpatrick, Young did this:

USA chants echoed through the gallery surrounding the Island Green as the tandem headed to the final hole—little did those folks know that they were about to get some Bethpage payback.

With the honor, Young fired an absolute seed. A 375-yard tigh draw, the longest drive on Sawgrass’ 18th in the ShotLink ere (since 2004). He forced Fitzpatrick to follow suit—but he couldn’t answer the call. Fitzy’s drive ended up in the pine straw right of the fairway, forcing him to lay up just short of the green.

Young went on the offensive with just a wedge in hand, and got it back on the green’s plateau—one of the few players to do so successfully all day (the long drive helped). But after a birdie miss from the fringe, Young now needed Fitzpatrick to miss from eight feet.

In this case, however, Fitzy did answer the call.

After cleaning up a putt that would be given in any other scenario, Young was officially a PLAYERS Champion—I’m sure Keegan Bradley was smiling somewhere seeing one of his guys take down half of Team Europe.

For the last half-hour of this championship, Young was pretty much just doing this.

Make par after a 50-yard plugged bunker shot. Dart down wind at 17. A drive that turned the hardest hole on the golf course into a flip wedge.

That’s how you take a championship. That’s how one of the best players in the world performs under the gun—and yes, I mean one of the best players in the world.

Young, somehow, just got his first win last July. But in his 10 starts between in the Wyndham and THE PLAYERS, he finished 11th or better six times. That’s the behavior of a player who got a little taste of winning—and now he’s coming for the whole bottle.

It’d say THE PLAYERS is one hell of a sip.

(Something to keep in mind while looking ahead a bit: Young grabbed top-10 finishes at the Masters in 2023 and 2024.)
