Dense fog is covering Shinnecock Hills on Thursday morning, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY — Mother Nature threw us a little buzzkill on Thursday morning, with dense fog engulfing Shinnecock Hills on Day 1 of the U.S. Open. Fourteen players started their rounds, but were soon called off the golf course. Play was suspended at 7:05 a.m., and it resumed two hours later at 9:05 a.m.

On my way to the golf course this morning, fog was an issue on the road in and out of the property, but it was severely worse over Shinnecock.

For Thursday's morning wave, this fog delay is worst-case scenario. With brutal wind in the forecast for later in the day, the morning hours are scheduled to be the only calm stretch of the week. Now, after the delay, it's unlikely the first round will be completed before sunset.
