It didn’t take long for Willy Z to become one of the most popular guys out on the PGA TOUR. Of course, folks loved that he resembled the caddie from Happy Gilmore, but he also had unlimited game.
He won the FedEx St. Jude Championship in 2022, and lost in two playoffs that same year: the Farmers Insurance Open and PGA Championship. A few things go his way and we’re talking about one of the best players in the world.
But a back injury in 2023 derailed things a bit and Willy Z hasn’t been the same since. And on Monday, he announced that he’s gone back under the knife to fix two re-herniated disks.
In 11 starts this season he made nine cuts, but only finished inside the top 25 three times and had nothing inside the top 10.
The good news is that he expects to be back by the fall, but it sucks he won’t have the opportunity to earn his way onto the United States Ryder Cup team. Despite everything he’s accomplished already, Zalatoris has yet to represent the U.S. at either team event.
Hopefully this is the last back surgery for Willy Z and he can just focus on golf from here on out. The kid is too talented to lose his career to injury.
