Wyndham Clark Had No Idea His Dad Was Waiting on 18

Miles Russell wasn’t the only one at Shinnecock Hills to pull off a Father’s Day surprise on Sunday. Randall Clark made his son’s second U.S. Open title something he’ll never forget.

Wyndham finished the third round at 7 under, six shots ahead of a group tied for second at 1 under. Most thought it was curtains, but it was still the final round of the U.S. Open, at one of the toughest courses in the world. Anything could’ve happened—and it almost did.

The sloppy play we saw from Wyndham on Saturday carried over to Sunday afternoon, but this time, he didn’t pull off all the Houdini saves like the day before. He bogeyed Nos. 2, 5 and 7 before making the turn with a 3-over 38. After his lead shrunk to one shot, Wyndham made a scrappy, U.S.-Open-style birdie at the par-5 16th to get back out in front by two.

He gave the shot right back with a three-putt bogey at the par-3 17th, but was still just a closing par away from a second major championship. After a drive in the rough, an approach to just outside 50 feet, and a stellar lag putt, the U.S. Open Trophy and Jack Nicklaus Medal were his once again.

But what Wyndham didn’t know was that his dad, Randall, took a red-eye flight last night to watch his son vie for his second major, this time at Shinnecock Hills. A Father’s Day memory that the entire Clark family will remember forever.

It wasn’t as easy as he had hoped it would be, and the New York crowd was definitely not on his side, but being able to share that moment with his dad no doubt made all the struggles of the day worth it.

The good stuff.
