Vijay Singh was set to make his 32nd appearance at the Masters this week but withdrew on Monday due to injury. The 62-year-old made the cut at Augusta National last year and finished in a tie for 58th.
But today we remember his win back in 2000 when he entered the final round with a three-shot advantage and won by the same margin over South African legend Ernie Els.
The man from Fiji opened with an even-par 72 but shot three straight under-par rounds to close out the weekend including a Friday 67 that helped to separate him from the field.
It was his only Green Jacket, but he contended a few more times in the mid-2000s. He finished seventh in 2002, T-6 in 2003 and 2004, T-5 in 2005, and T-6 again in 2006. In his other 25 starts at the Masters, he failed to finish inside the top 10 and missed 10 cuts. Singh is also only one of two Masters Champions to have also won the Par 3 contest (1994).
Singh entered the week with three top-20 finishes in four starts on the PGA TOUR Champions this season. We'll miss watching the 2006 Hall of Fame inductee chase the weekend at the 89th playing of the Masters.
