Most golf fans can remember exactly what they were doing when social media and sports networks around the country started to blow up with the news that Scottie Scheffler was arrested outside of Valhalla before the second round of the PGA Championship.
It really was one of the weirdest, most confusing, and ridiculous few hours in the long history of this game.
Luckily for golf fans, Full Swing was boots-on-the-ground recording all the aftermath and reactions.
During this week’s episode of Skratch’s newest podcast, “Vanity Index”, Full Swing creator and Pro Shop’s very own Chad Mumm and his co-host Wells Adams take listeners behind the scenes of the episode that lifts a curtain on Scheffler’s arrest.
“Craziest moment filming this show of all the crazy moments. That was the wildest day,” Mumm said.
Former PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh stopped by and joined Chad and Wells to talk about his experience during that discombobulating morning.
His retelling of the few hours is fantastic so we don’t want to ruin it for you, but here’s a little tidbit from the show.
“My first call that morning, probably 6 a.m. or so, looked at the caller ID deciding whether I was gonna answer or not, and it was Scott Scheffler. Senior, not Scottie. And I said, well, that probably can’t be good news," Waugh said.
“I picked it up and he said, ‘Hey, good morning. Have you heard the news?’ And I said ‘No, I haven’t.’ I hadn’t turned on the television yet," Waugh recalls the conversation, transcribed below.
Scheffler Sr.: ‘Well, Scottie’s been arrested.’
Waugh: ‘Okay, last night?’
Scheffler Sr.: ‘No, this morning on the way to the golf course.’
Waugh: ‘That doesn’t sound right....Speeding, or?’
Scheffler Sr.: ‘No, he had an altercation with a police officer.’
"That certainly doesn’t sound like the Scottie I know," Waugh remembers thinking during the conversation before responding,
Waugh: ‘Is he okay?’
Scheffler Sr.: ‘He called me from the car on the way to the station.’
"He was now talking as a father, obviously very nervous about his son," Waugh remembers thinking before ending the call.
We can’t overstate how fantastic the former head of the PGA of America was on this episode, you’re not going to believe the insight he provided.
Waugh also had a great story about Tiger Woods and remembered the time he hit balls next to The King, Arnold Palmer.
