The reunion we’ve been waiting for in the golf industry is finally happening. After a 15-year hiatus, The Skins Game is making a big comeback led by none other than Skratch’s parent company, Pro Shop.
Started in 1983, The Skins Game was the marquee unofficial money event on the PGA Tour, bringing together the biggest stars of the game for a high-stakes competition unlike anything golf fans had ever seen. Showcasing the grit and competitive spirit of top-billed names like Arnold Palmer, Fred Couples, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods, The Skins Game was must-see TV every year during Thanksgiving week. In just its third year running, it became the highest-rated televised golf tournament—out-rating Jack Nicklaus winning his sixth green jacket earlier that year.
"Like Turkey, football, and Charlie Brown, The Skins Game was a part of my family's Thanksgiving tradition my entire childhood...it's the first golf tournament I remember watching and seeing those palm trees swaying in the desert in the middle of a cold and rainy east coast Thanksgiving always felt like an escape,” Chad Mumm, co-founder of Pro Shop said. “I am honored to be a part of bringing that tradition back to life for the modern era in a way that lives up to its history and heritage but also brings it forward into the future."
Formatted as a hole-by-hole competition between four golfers The Skins Game was known for high purses with the last event in 2008 featuring a $1 million purse option divided by hole. K.J Choi reigns as the champion after his 2008 win earned him $415,000.
The re-introduction of The Skins Game comes shortly after Pro Shop made a splash in the live golf event space in August with The Creator Classic, which featured 16 top YouTube creators competing and drew over 100 million impressions.
To produce this made-for-TV event as part of an exclusive deal with the PGA Tour, Pro Shop has teamed up with Propagate Content. A leading content studio, Propagate Content is no stranger in the high-profile sports production world as the brains behind the new Owen Wilson golf comedy about to drop on Apple TV+ and documenting the enthralling stories that needed to be told, including those of Johnny Manziel, Manti Te'o, Jake Paul, and The Danbury Thrashers through Netflix’s Untold series and the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in Max’s Emmy-nominated LFG.
