All right, TGL is a success.
They did it. In just a few short weeks they took even the biggest skeptics and showed them that this can be fun and enjoyable without having to be the U.S. Open. Considering it’s a win, the mind obviously goes to what is next so here are the top-10 free agents out there that I think could make TGL pop in its next iteration.
The clear No. 1 pick for any team out there. TGL is built for long hitters to take advantage of the pinch points and crazy obstacles in the way and Bryson is one of the longest in the game. He will talk nonstop (both good and bad for him and his team) and he will provide at least one Bryson moment per week. Also, I cannot wait...I truly cannot wait...to have him explain some advanced, scientific proposal about indoor golf or sims or whatever to his teammates because you know it’ll likely be 60/70 accurate and will have some errors within the explanation and whatever teammate it is listening to him will be starring off in space like a stoned college kid that accidentally got sat next to Neil deGrasse Tyson at a charity dinner.
Close your eyes and think about this for a second; Jordan Spieth, playing competitive golf without Michael Greller by his side so his theories and thoughts and deep takes will be directed at someone else. And he will be mic’d up the entire time! I truly cannot wait. Jordan is perfect for TGL. A huge name, a familiar face, and a guy who speaks about golf and his own game in as unique a way as anyone in the game. And as we have learned watching TGL, a lot of the success comes down to shots around the greens, something Spieth will excel at.
Oh come on, you know I’m right here! Is Patrick Reed a guy you want to watch play golf? Probably not. Does he seem like the kind of guy you want to have a beer with? Only if you’re being paid to have that beer (and still probably not!). But him on a team where you can talk a little bit of a shit and get under the other team’s skin? That’s the scenario that Reed thrives in. Villains play in these environments just as well as heroes do.
I’m pretty confident that if TGL does expand, Dallas will be the obvious first stop because you can actually man a team of players from Dallas (novel!). Scottie pairing up with Jordan and Will Zalatoris will make a ton of sense, plus, it’s nice to have the best athlete on the planet involved in a project around your sport.
Also, rumor is Scottie hits it pretty good and has some nasty hands around the greens.
Hits it hard, has major swag and I think will be a sneaky great shit talking, which is one of the key skills to being a TGL star. I think Zalatoris will be next season’s Wyndham Clark.
I think she’d be the all-star of the entire thing within one episode, full go. I’d love to test the Sofi Center’s rules on smoking indoors. She has a perfect personality for this and would shine under the lights and there is no reason a LPGA player couldn’t jump into this and be helpful. No offense to Kevin Kisner, but she definitely hits it as far as he has this season off the tee. Give me Charley!
I mean, he’s Jon Rahm. I don’t see Jon Rahm enough playing golf these days and I’d like to see him doing that more.
His game is so, so good and I think having to hear Hatton say something positive after an opponent hits a crappy golf shot will be worth the price of admission. I wonder how his body will react to that level of approach. Will it be like when the Grinch hears the singing down on Whoville after he stole all the presents and his heart started to grow?
Similar to Zalatoris, a young guy with swag who I think, once comfortable, would be good at throwing some digs. Nobody is going to be Tom Kim, but I think Akshay has the ability to captivate the audience with some big shots and cool short game shots. Editor's Note: The guy said he wants to be a YouTuber—get him a producer editor and let's see the Akshay TGL Mini Doc, ya?
I’m serious. Tony Romo has game good enough to compete in TGL (he’s no pro golfer by any stretch but he can hit a fairway and a make a 10-footer from time to time). He’s competitive as hell and more importantly than all of this, he’s an excellent, excellent talker. I keep getting the sense that a Dallas team happens in the coming years and if that is the case, a quartet of Scheffler, Spieth, Zalatoris and Romo would be about as fun and exciting as an “expansion” team could get.
