Well, we’re going to have to wait a lot longer for Tiger Woods’ return than we thought. On Tuesday, Tiger announced that he ruptured his left Achilles while ramping up his preparation to return to the PGA TOUR.
“As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,” Tiger wrote in a social media post. “This morning, Dr. Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon. ‘The surgery went smoothly, and we expect a full recovery,’ added Dr. Stucken.”
While there was some hope Tiger would commit to THE PLAYERS Championship last week, that never materialized. The expectation now was the 15-time major champion would return at the Masters come April.
Now everything’s on hold—again.
Recovery time for a ruptured Achilles can vary depending on the person. Most people can return to normal activities after four to six months, but a return to sports can take anywhere from nine to 12 months. It doesn't help that it's his left ankle, either. (Tiger's "rupture" also sounds a bit more intense than Langer's tear).
Bernhard Langer tore his Achilles in February of last year and was back on the PGA TOUR Champions three months later. He took inspiration from Aaron Rodgers’ rehab process and was determined to get back as quickly as possible.
Tiger has come back from every injury in the book, but this is a brutal blow for the GOAT.
Heal up, Tiger. Hopefully we see you soon.
