Why Caddie Steve Williams Hung Up Twice When Tiger Woods Called to Hire Him

Tiger Woods and Steve Williams are one of the most iconic player-caddie duos in the history of golf. The pair won 13 major championships in 12 years and there’s a new book that details the entire journey.

Evin Priest is the co-author of “Together We Roared” and stopped by this week’s episode of Dan On Golf to chat about the recent release. He also told an incredible story about how the start of Tiger and Steve’s relationship came to be.

“Tiger had asked around, you know, Butch Harmon, Mark O’Meara, a few other players. They all suggested a couple different options, but the one common denominator was Steve Williams. He was actually going to caddie for Ray Floyd at the Doral Open.

“So, [Steve] gets a call late at night, he’s just coming from New Zealand the day before, he’s jet-lagged. And this voice says, ‘Hey, it’s Tiger Woods.’ And Steve just goes, ‘F-off, Bob,’ and hangs the phone up. He thinks it’s a friend of his back in Oregon, a club professional named Bob who can do a really good Tiger imitation.

“Tiger rang back, he hung up again. And on the third time he said ‘It really is Tiger Woods!’ (Steve’s) stomach sank and he thought, ‘Oh my God, maybe it’s not Bob, maybe it actually is Tiger Woods.’ And the rest is history.”
