Do The Pros Actually Look Better in Rain Gear?

Early rounds at Torrey for the Genesis brought out some of the best in GORP-y golf gear.

When I pulled up the Wunderground app on Thursday morning to check the forecast, my first thoughts were as follows:

“It’s too bad I can’t play golf today.”

And then

“I can’t wait to see what gorpy fits PGA guys are pulling off on the course for Round 1.”

You’re probably familiar with “GORP” by now, but if not, it stands for “Good Ol’ Raisins and Peanuts,” an ode to trail mix, the time-tested snack for hikers, bikers, and beyond. In 2025, though, it’s a more apt descriptor for tech-laden outdoor gear and apparel. As a lifelong golfer and all-around Outdoorsy Guy™, the opportunity to see some of my favorite PGA pros rock some Gorp-adjacent gear is a real thrill.

Most of these guys on TOUR are still regularly wearing sweaters and ill-fitting performance pants, but when they get themselves decked out in rain gear, it’s an absolute drip-fest (and I’m not talking about the raindrops beading off their backs). The baggy, swishy duds look so sick billowing around in the breeze, water shining on their waterproof-membraned surfaces and covering up their shoes like a pair of 2000s JNCO jeans.

Your mileage may vary on how tight golfers' pants should be, but I will never vouch for those narrow joggers or butt-squeezing polyester pants. Rain pants are a sight for my sore eyes. I’d sooner ban white chinos and slim-fit joggers than deprive us all of the Gore-Tex swag we see on a rainy day.

But what about jackets? Don’t they limit players’ range of motion? Sure, rain jackets may be restricting, but I’ve worn a few golf-oriented rain jackets over the past few years and they’re not nearly as stiff as the slickers of yesteryear. Zip one of those babies up to the very top, throw on your rain pants and you instantly become a certified Gorp Lord.

Just take a look at Hideki Matsuyama, who rocked his rain jacket and pants throughout his round, Viktor Hovland and his white rain jacket zipped all the way to the top, or Max Homa who had the stealthy all-black look going all the way down to his rain gloves. These guys just get it. Then there’s Ludvig Aberg, who expertly layered a white long-sleeved base layer with a sleeveless wind shirt — possibly one of my favorite combos in all of golf.

The only downside to all of this is the absolute travesty that is Scottie Scheffler’s rain jacket. Why does it look like it's about to melt off? Someone get this man an Arc’teryx contact.

A bucket hat is always a good idea, but it’s an especially good one in the rain. It’ll keep water off your face, your ears, and your neck. I love this one from Adidas, a brand that has put out some incredible rain gear over the past few years.

Manors Gailes Windbreaker

For days when a downpour is unlikely but you’re still going to encounter some bad weather, I love a windbreaker with a water-repellent finish. It’s a little more comfortable than a rain jacket but still keeps light rain and blustery winds at bay. Manors is based in the UK, so it knows all about this kind of weather.
