Jason Day's Malbon Cardigan Is a Reminder—Yes, You Can Do That

He's "Going from casual to contemporary gentleman," says Stephen Malbon

Jason Day's attire has been the talk of the TOUR of recent, as far as attire conversations on the TOUR can possibly go. And, in my humble opinion, for good reason.

The last time we saw Day at Torrey Pines it was in a flex of a quarter-zip and a full-on sweatsuit, which he followed up at Torrey and doubled down on with a grey set. It got the Taste Department talking, it got stewards of golf's new wave talking. It got me thinking about how the conversation here is a bit bigger than clothes, and more about how these moments, and the discussions they yield, could actually inspire a meaningful change that leads to a little bit more sartorial creativity in the pro game.

And if you had any doubt that these fits are authentically Jason—not a marketing stunt or a combative chess move by his apparel partners in Malbon Golf—Stephen Malbon confirmed to us that Jason is indeed picking out his own clothes.

Today, for the third round at the Genesis Invitational, also at Torrey Pines this year following the wildfire devastation in the tournament's annual home in Los Angeles, Day showed up in a graphic cardigan that reminds us all that our man contains multitudes.

I asked Malbon whether Day picked out the piece himself again. Malbon told me in a direct message "Yes, he loves that sort of thing. Going from casual to contemporary gentleman."

Day is keeping us on our toes.(Love that he completes the fit with pleated pants, a polo buttoned all the way the fuck up, and a visor. I love Visor Day.) If what he and Malbon were doing was some sort of try-hard provocation, he would have just showed up in a Navy sweatsuit to Torrey, or wore a full-ass fishtail parka and rain boots on Friday.

But what Day is showing us about himself—and teaching the rest of us who care about what we wear—is that having a "uniform" is not for everybody. You don't have to be the person who's known for wearing workwear or only wears black. You don't have to accept that you are a jeans and a T-shirt guy or a golf skirt gal.

True style is about exploration and expressing as many parts of who you are as you can through the clothing you wear and the way that you wear it. Jason Day's move from cozy boi to modern menswear appreciator sends the message that he's gonna keep on being Jason Day.
