At 14-under, Jason Day might not be within reach of the leaders at the Sentry (cheers to what's sure to be a fun battle between Hideki and Collin today), but he stepped out for his Sunday round and opened a sartorial door I'd previously closed: the one that leads to the humble jogger.
The pant synonymous with its gathered hem has lived a full life in the journey of cyclical fashion trends. First in streetwear, until it became so ubiquitous that its cool-factor began to wane. Still a Sunday staple for loungers across the world, the jogger pant's reign hasn't fully ended, and its entrance into the professional golf fashion conversation didn't exactly happen with a bang. My earliest memory of seeing joggers on TOUR are those that clung to Justin Thomas' ankles tighter than Scottie Scheffler's grip on the number one world ranking.
But it was something different. The five-pocket golf pant has hit the TOUR with a fury, but never really carried the rebellious vibe it needed to. They started to look dorkier than anything, and soon joggers would give the same signal. I'd written off ever seeing a great execution among my golf heroes.
On Sunday, Day opened my eyes to the issue holding the jogger back from becoming what it could have been—what it still can be. You see, Day's execution—a loose-fit, monochrome styling choice, and gasp, an untucked, un-collared shirt?
Day and his partners at Malbon have been putting on a masterclass of how to marry laid back muni vibes with professional golf. The blade collar polo—guess it counts! It, and the aforementioned nylon pants, come from Malbon's latest performance collection: a tech-forward, yet casual and cool execution of what I imagine golf workout gear would look like. But we're not watching BTS of Day working out, we're seeing him flex it on the big stage.
The TOUR's Opening Drive in Hawaii is the perfect place to experiment and see where the limits are. No one is better positioned to do this in the style space than Day, thanks to his link up with Malbon, and their execution of what a jogger can be. The monochrome styling, addition of a visor, and the loose, blade collar polo, untucked, bring what are already a well-tailored pair of performance pants onto a new stage. Not just in golf, but on the PGA TOUR, where strict dress codes are continuing to be challenged for all of our benefit.
