The J.Lindeberg Brent Wool T-Shirt Brings Mountain Tech to the Course

Fiber & Optics is our series in praise of golf clothes made from natural materials. This week it’s a wool tee from J.Lindeberg

Each week, we’re going to feature one of our favorite golf style pieces that is made from natural materials. Cotton, wool, cashmere, silk — these are our heroes. This time we’re taking a closer look at the J.Lindeberg Brent Wool T-Shirt.

If we’re talking about natural fibers, few can match the versatility of merino wool. Named for the Merino sheep it's borne from, merino wool was produced exclusively in Spain throughout the Middle Ages, but eventually made its way around the world as flocks of the sheep were sent everywhere from New Zealand to South Africa to the United States. Hundreds of years later and it’s still one of the greatest natural fibers for clothing, specifically for athletic apparel. Made with 100% merino wool, the J.Lindeberg Brent Wool T-Shirt is the perfect example of what the fiber can do, performance wise.

Let’s get into the benefits. Merino wool’s best qualities from a performance point of view are its temperature-regulating properties, natural moisture management, odor resistance, and breathability. Plus, unlike its coarser, itchier cousins, merino wool’s fine fibers give it a naturally soft and smooth feel that is comfortable against the skin, which, when paired with its other myriad benefits, makes it the ideal layer for the modern athlete. It’s primarily used by outdoor and hiking brands like Smartwool and Ibex, but its use is becoming much more widespread in the sports world, including for golf.

The Brent t-shirt’s lightweight wool pack a punch when it comes to temperature regulation. It is a great winter layer, as its wavy wool fibers create pockets to trap body heat and keep you warm. But where it really shines is in the heat. Its ability to exhaust excess heat and moisture keeps your body temperature down when exterior temps are on the rise is something many polyester fabrics promise but can’t quite deliver on.

Part of keeping your body temperature down is getting sweat away from your skin. Merino wool can trap up to 30% of its own weight in moisture vapor before it even starts to feel wet. And unlike polyester, merino will stay cool (or warm in the winter) even once it’s been fully saturated with sweat.

Speaking of sweat, if you’ve ever worn a Dri-FIT shirt, you know that polyester fabrics are egregiously stinky. If you show up to the first tee with a polyester polo on, you’ll probably smell by the 5th hole. With merino, you don’t have to worry about this. Naturally odor-resistant, merino has antimicrobial properties that inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

The tee is perfect for long summer practice sessions and rounds at your local muni. The light grey melange colorway looks great with anything, and its uncharacteristically subtle J.Lindeberg logos make it something you can easily wear off the course, too.

The shirt has raglan sleeves for optimal swing mobility and clever mesh details in all the right places, enhancing the temperature regulating benefits of the wool. It’s made from lightweight merino, so it’s best for the summer, but you could also very easily pair it with your favorite golf hoodie for spring or fall rounds when it might not be so warm. If you want something you can wear in more varied temperatures, the brand offers a long-sleeve version, too.

While many brands and consumers may prefer newer (and more affordable) polyester and techy fabrics, there’s nothing better than a shirt made from 100% merino wool. If I’m on the range or the tee box this summer, odds are high you’ll see me wearing merino, and most likely it’ll be the Brent t-shirt I’m sporting.
