No other golf shop in the world has a reputation quite like the merch HQ at Augusta National Golf Club. It's borderline sacred ground, and one of the most talked about attractions outside of the golf course. The legendary gnomes, Grade A cashmere sweaters, more rope hats than you could ever imagine—it's practically a black hole for your wallet.
As a first timer, I was fully anticipating to do some major damage (like paying off my card until the next Masters kind of damage), but I after walking around for most of the day on Wednesday and seeing people lug bags back and forth, I had the thought 'what if I make this a little challenge'? What if I went in there with a specific goal in mind to NOT spend an obscene amount of money? Will my friends and family complain? Maybe. But hey, my card, my rules.
And let me tell you, the folks that guide you through the lines bait you. They are the friendliest, most hospitable people on the planet (like Chik-fil-A but 1,000x) and get you primed and ready to spend some moolah.
Walking in, it looked a lot like how I imagined Santa's workshop to look if they sold toys instead of delivering them. Everything is sectioned off, people with earpieces to assist you, and lots and lots of options. But I mustered up every ounce of willpower I had and stayed strong.
I only spent $188.73, here's how:
I highly recommend bringing someone along for the ride. One, to pinch you because no you're not dreaming. And two, to be the person to talk you out of making decisions that may end up causing you (your wallet) harm.
Just like a workout spotter, you need someone to reign it back in for you. Tell them your budget and ask them to micromanage you.
Are you serious about saving? Leave the big ole shopping bags alone! As enticing as they seem, you need to stay focused. The best way to monitor your spending is to only pick up items that you can carry without strain. (I know you sickos, this isn't bringing in the groceries in one trip kind of vibes.)
Your eyes will always overestimate the amount of merch you can carry, let your arms guide you.
The best and most wallet-friendly options are almost always the accessories. Hats, belts, key chains, they're sensible and easy go-to items to commemorate the moment.
I bought like 5 hats. They're simple and no one can turn away a fun little hat moment, especially one as special as a Masters hat. (Pro tip: if you're there this weekend, find the terry cloth bucket hat—it's next level.)
I, for one, love that random little display near the cash registers with all the weird little trinkets to comb through while I wait. They're are some fun coasters, holiday ornaments, and small tokens that would make great gifts, as a little "I was thinking of you while being in golfer's paradise".
Good luck out there, and Happy Masters Weekend, friends.
