This isn't another "is Nike Golf back?" story. But this is another a plea to athletes, specifically golfers, to be bold.
In case you missed it (though I don't know how you could), Naomi Osaka just solidified herself as a fashion legend.
I honestly can't think of a better or bigger moment in the 'sport x style' landscape. This is perfection. This is a statement. It's "look at me" in the very best way.
Osaka and the team at Nike dreamt up visuals inspired by jellyfish that helped to transform to her on-court look. It's a classic razorback dress, with hues of turquoise blue and green tie-dye with these ruffled tendrils meant to mimic tentacles, complemented by a matching zip-up.
But her walk-in fit it where we all pause for dramatic effect. The dress is layered over these billowy, pleated pants. And the star of the show is her striking, wide-brimmed hat that's draped in a gauzy sheer veil that just takes the whole look there (as in another dimension).
The whole thing is insane, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. And the more I look at it, the more I long for others to even put in a fraction of the time and thought that Osaka does into her sporting style.
She's nothing if not intentional, and I truly believe that she's one of few athletes that actually understands the power of fashion. I believe plenty of athletes love style, but few understand its nuance and ability to spark conversation. Between Osaka and Sir Lewis Hamilton, there's no one else doing it better.
There's no better time than a major (or grand slam) to make a statement.
I understand that with our sport, there are no walk-ins or tunnels equipped with hundreds of cameras and flashing lights but there are pressers. There's always pro ams and practice rounds. I think Jason Day's American flag shorts at Oakmont were the best example of this. Day and Malbon seized the moment by creating a moment—and it was beautifully executed.
These moments are like call backs. Visual cues to take us back to where we were and what we were doing. It's not just about seeking attention, but being brave enough to put yourself out there and be a steward of the sport.
Golf can't remain in it's quiet corner if we want to continue to be relevant. We're unique because the biggest names in our game aren't just professional golfers, we have personalities and influencers that help push the needle. But I would love to see more of the pros take the risk and be daring.
Naomi is creating looks that she loves, they're all extensions of her personality and her own creativity. She's not being someone she's not, but rather being herself and leaning in, hard.
It's the most brilliant playbook there is.
