Trend Tracker: Gear Notes From The CJ Cup Byron Nelson & Beyond

Gear news and nuggets from the PGA TOUR and around the world.

This week the PGA TOUR is headed to Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Cricket Club for the Truist Championship, where Rory McIlroy is the defending champion (from his win in 2024 at Quail Hollow). But before we get into all of that this week, we need to take a look back at the big events in golf from this past week in Texas and on the LPGA Tour.

Scottie Wins in Resounding Fashion

After going into Sunday with an 8-shot lead, Scottie Scheffler made it look easy at TPC Craig Ranch by shooting a final round 63, and beating Erik Van Rooyen by 8-shots!

Now, when it comes to gear, Scottie Scheffler’s golf bag is about as levelheaded as he is, due to the fact that he’s not much of a tinkerer - who's to blame him after the year he had in 2024, right? Saying that, he was once again spotted earlier in the week working with TaylorMade tour support staff on a new Qi35 driver, but the Qi10 (dot core head) was in the bag for the win.

BBBBUUUUTT…. Scottie did make one change this week at the other end of his bag and went with a Titleist Vokey SM10 Low Bounce K-grind 60-06. The wide sole likely came in handy when dealing with the bunkers around Craig Ranch.

One last note on Scottie and his putter of choice—the L-Neck TaylorMade Spider Tour X. The win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson is his 10th win since switching to the putter (8 PGA TOUR, 1 Hero, 1 Olympic Gold).

Erik Van Rooyen Had a New Weapon

To quote the great Ricky Bobby “If you ain’t first, you’re last”, and in the case of everybody other than Scottie Scheffler, it was a battle for second best this past week in Texas. One of those players battling it out was Erik Van Rooyen, and this week he added a new Elyte 7-wood to the bag to tackle the longest par-71 course on the PGA TOUR.

When talking with Callaway Tour Media Manager Johnny Thompson, he explained that testing this 7-wood dates back to the Farmers Insurance Open, where Erik wanted a club to help get the ball out of thick rough.

Speaking of EVR, another cool club in his bag is the driver—the Callaway Elyte (see above). What makes it interesting is the way the driver has been setup, with the adjustable backweight removed and more weight placed forward in the head. This configuration makes the driver naturally lower spin, but by doing this with an Elyte (core) model vs one of Callaway’s lower spin Triple Diamond models, it helps to maintain greater forgiveness. It could also be that Erik just prefers the look of the core Elyte model and the adjustments were made to get the launch conditions he was looking for.

Haeran Ryu Gets First LPGA Tour Win For Spider ZT (Zero Torque) Putter

Haeran Ryu closed out the Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion in style with a final round 8-under 64 to win by 5 shots over 2024 Olympic Silver medalist Esther Henseleit.

Not only was this Haeran's third LPGA Tour victory, but as far as her clubs are concerned, this win marks the second victory on a major professional tour for the TaylorMade Spider ZT (zero torque). The first win belongs to Brian Harman, who won just a couple of weeks ago.
