LAGC Boss on Finau Addition: 'Tony Understands TGL Is Different'

Co-Founder and President Neal Hubman told us why he grabbed the fan-favorite for a one-match contract

Attention, TGL fans: Big Tone is coming to the SoFi Center.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Golf Club announced it signed Tony Finau to a one-match contract for Monday’s bout against the New York Golf Club at 5 p.m. ET—TGL is hosting a doubleheader on the 24th, with Boston Common and Atlanta going head-to-head at 9 p.m. Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, two members of LAGC, are unable to make the match due to prior commitments, leaving Finau, Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala to don LA’s black and white.

Finau has long been dubbed one of the nicest guys out on TOUR and draws big crowds wherever he tees it up. The fans are going to be pumped seeing him walk out of the tunnel come Monday afternoon.

“Tony is the perfect fit for LAGC—not just because of his elite talent, but because of who he is as a person,” Neal Hubman, Co-Founder and President of LAGC, told Skratch. “He embodies everything we stand for: a team-first mentality, a love for competition, and a commitment to inspiring the next generation. He’s a family man, a true advocate for growing the game in new and meaningful ways, and above all, a competitor."

We’ve seen Wyndham Clark become one of TGL’s breakout stars and that’s because he’s active on the mic, constantly interacting with ESPN’s Matthew Berry, and shows great emotion when a big moment ignites.

Finau can do the same.

We’ve seen him do walk-and-talks during tournament broadcasts, but more importantly, we’ve seen him show passion and excitement at team events before: the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

"Tony understands that TGL is different—team golf, under the lights, in primetime, with a live audience—and he brings the perfect mix of talent, energy, and personality that fans connect with," Hubman said. "His infectious energy and ability to perform under pressure elevates everyone around him, making him the ideal addition to LAGC. We’re thrilled to have been able to make this happen and can’t wait for fans to see him shine in this exciting new format.”

The six-time TOUR winner is going to make a great addition to TGL’s Monday twin bill, but it also got me thinking, what other pros should be on the shortlist to pinch hit?

According to the Palm Beach Post, the TGL has a list of local PGA TOUR stars that are ready to fill in when needed if something like travel complications or injuries arise. On a recent episode of Smylie Kaufman’s podcast, Jordan Spieth mentioned that a few teams have already asked him to fill in for an event.

Finau and Spieth are up there on our wish lists for sure, but Shane Bacon’s recent deep-dive into who the TGL should look into adding sparked an idea: let’s get the ladies involved.

How awesome would it be to see Nelly Korda join the BallFrogs for a night? Or Charley Hull partnering with her fellow Englishman Fleetwood on LA’s squad—you think smoking is allowed in the SoFi Center?

TGL is in a unique place, they could take this league anywhere. Nothing’s written in stone and they should use that to their advantage. Hell, call up the Content King himself, Bryson DeChambeau. The game’s coming back together soon anyway judging by the recent meeting at the White House with President Trump, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Jay Monahan, and Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

This league’s purpose is to have fun and entertain, and letting names like DeChambeau and Korda guest star would do just that.
