Recap: It Was a Mixed Bag For Chevron's Opening Day

The biggest storylines from day one of the LPGA's first major of the year.

What's a major without a little bit of drama? The first round of the Chevron Championship has been a mixed bag, and it's still not over. Round one play has been suspended due to dangerous weather conditions.

(Shoutout to the social team for being so on it with the updates, and if you're down in the Houston area, be sure to catch the action IRL this weekend, tickets are still available, for under $50!)

Before things were paused, we all watched as course conditional gradually got tougher through out the day. The added challenge made it even more impressive to watch the amateurs show out early, while many fan-favorites, on the other hand, struggled.

It's safe to say that it was quite the day at The Club at Carlton Woods. Those who went off in the morning wave got the better end of the stick, with clubhouse leaders Yan Liu and Haeran Ryu setting the early tone at 7-under par.

Hyo Joo Kim, a previous winner on the LPGA this season, sits one stroke back at 6-under with a slew of players at 3 and 4-under.

But all around, there were moves being made, here are some of the storylines to monitor as round one wraps up and we look ahead to Friday at Chevron. Note: 24 players were still on the course when play was suspended, so they'll complete the first round early in the day before the rest of the field moves on to second-round play.

Carlota Cignada Sets 9-Hole Record

The Spaniard started her round on the back nine as her first nine. She stumbled a bit at the start making the turn with a +2 (38). But things quickly turned around with a birdie on the first hole. And the birdie train didn't stop. She'd make three more and an eagle to best Jack Nicklaus' score of 31 (Nicklaus is the designer of the course). Cignada left the day tied for fourth at 4-under.

Nelly's Stumbling Start

On the other hand, defending champ Nelly Korda had a rough day in the office.

Korda visually looked out of sorts. The putter was cold. She wasn't making the incredible shots we are used to seeing from her.

She finished the day with a 5-over 77. Taking title contention out of the equation, Korda will need to piece together an exceptional round to see the weekend.

Gianna Clemente's Early Dance With Contention

The 17-year-old amateur was in contention early after carding a birdie and an eagle through her first four holes. She was feeling it and even told NBC's Amy Rogers that she felt right at home.

With dad on the bag, Clemente was looking to maintain her composure and stay competitive. She struggled a touch on the back nine, but managing to stay in the red with a 1-under 71 on the day.

The ESPN+ Featured Group Coverage Was...Not Good

ESPN+ is said to broadcast 48 hours of featured groups for Chevron beginning at 9am this morning, and well...things did not go as planned for the afternoon.

According to Meg Adkins of The Fried Egg, coverage was down anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, as Adkins posted these tweets an hour apart.

Hopefully things go as planned for the rest of weekend because the people want (need) more!

We agree with this take, featured group content can be such a great look at the players and their processes.

Yani Tseng Trying Something New

Well! This is new.

Five-time major winner and right-handed player Yani Tseng has been going through it with her putting. Her solution? Go lefty. She's been playing this way for about five months now and it's where she feels comfortable.

She told Beth Ann Nichols of Golfweek, that her instructor Brady Riggs, was the one who first suggested she try putting left-handed, reporting, "After she hit the ball well at the AIG Women's British Open last summer but missed the cut, Tseng came to the conclusion that she’d never win another golf tournament putting right-handed."

The way the golf brain works should be studied.

HBD, Lydia Ko!

The hall-of-famer rang in her 28th birthday during the first round.

She's currently +1 for the tournament.

Linn Grant Gets Original(s)

For all you style freaks, pay close attention to Linn Grant this week who will be scripted in full adidas Golf Originals. Much like Ludvig Aberg at the Masters, Grant's looks will surely be among the best of the tournament.

She went for a sleek look layering the cashmere knit sweater over the Originals golf dress creating a fun, blue and green monochromatic fit.
